IN a poor game of rugby, with both sides not at their best after the long lay-off, Bristol Harlequins gained revenge for Stroud's win at Brislington earlier in the season, writes Robin Cooke.

The first half belonged almost entirely to Harlequins and they were disappointed to change over with only a 3-0 lead. The score came in the 21st minute when Stroud were penalised for crossing and the fly-half Pager slotted the resulting kick.

All Stroud had to show for their efforts was Dan Gordon's probing and a couple of sniping breaks by Matt Fogarty.

The crucial moment came seven minutes into the second half when Jones intercepted a Stroud pass on the 22 metre line and crossed and crossed for a try near the posts. Pager added the extras to give Harlequins a 10-0 lead.

Dave Clutterbuck replaced Danny Price as Stroud set about reducing the deficit. After 58 minutes, with the best move of the game,Stroud moved the ball from one side of the field to the other and Harry Phillips crossed in the corner for an unconverted try.

Stroud were starting to enjoy more possession and, with Josh Stratton replacing Neil Sullivan and Cory Baker replacing Phillips to give the team fresh legs, they began to threaten the Harlequins line.

Harlequins however, were equal to anything Stroud could throw at them and, when referee Goss sounded the final whistle,Harlequins had held on for a victory that was just about deserved.
