Forest Green Rovers have signed former Rotherham and current England ‘C’ midfielder Steve Brogan until the end of the season .

The 24 year-old has been plying his trade at Stalybridge Celtic and Guiseley AFC in the Blue Square Bet North division over the past 12 months, but spent his youth and early professional career at Football League side Rotherham, where he was born.

An attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, Brogan scored 11 times in 36 games for Stalybridge in 2011/12, before trialling at Southend over the summer and moving to Guiseley this term – the West Yorkshire club are currently sitting 3rd after missing out on promotion to the Blue Square Bet National last season in the play-off game against Hyde.

Brogan signed his first professional contract with Rotherham in 2005, made 64 senior appearances for the club and was touted as a serious Premier League prospect, before injury and a change of manager disrupted his progress.

He moved to Alfreton Town in the Conference National on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2011 before shifting to Stalybridge after he failed to settle.

Rovers’ manager David Hockaday said: “Steve is a very talented footballer with a good pedigree – he’s been at Rotherham and was part of the latest England C squad alongside Kieron Forbes, Eddie Oshodi and Jamie Turley.

"He is an attacking midfielder, he can play out wide, he’s got two good feet, he’s technical, his set plays are excellent and he scores goals. As soon as it became clear that he was available, we made a move – he will be a very good addition to the squad.”

Brogan – who scored against Rovers for Rotherham in the 2007 FA Cup 2-2 draw at The New Lawn – will be given the number 28 shirt for the 2012/2013 season.

“I remember playing for Rotherham against Forest Green back in 2007 in the FA Cup, I scored a penalty in the 2-2 draw,” Brogan said.

“I’d describe myself as a goal-scoring midfielder, good on the ball and at set-pieces.

“I’m pretty confident I can get into the team and hold down a regular place; and then hopefully play well for Forest Green and help us earn promotion.”
