Sir Dave Brailsford will lead the Great Britain team in the Road World Championships later this month, despite relinquishing his performance director role in April to focus solely on his role as Team Sky principal.

The 50-year-old remains close to Shane Sutton, the British Cycling technical director, who will not travel to Ponferrada in Spain for the World Championships, which take place from September 21 to 28.

Sutton will instead focus on the track, with the British Championships taking place in Manchester from September 24 to 28 ahead of the European Championships in Guadeloupe next month.

Sutton said: "It made sense for me to ask Sir Dave to attend the Road World Championships as obviously the road is his focus and full-time role.

"The decision allows me to stay in Manchester with the track riders for the Nationals and to focus on the performances there which are increasingly important at this stage of the Olympic cycle."

British Cycling announced its long list for the Road World Championships on Thursday, with 2011 world champion Mark Cavendish opting out of the event.

Chris Froome and Sir Bradley Wiggins, Tour de France champions under Brailsford at Team Sky in 2013 and 2012, have been named and could feature in the same team for the first time since last year's World Championships in Florence.

Lizzie Armitstead, the Olympic silver medallist and Commonwealth Games champion, leads the British women's team.
