SEE the best of the modern art world amidst the medieval grandeur of Gloucester Cathedral at a unique exhibition.

One hundred sculptures by 61 artists have been strategically placed within the cathedral’s gothic splendour, in Crucible 2.

The billowing cloaked figures of Lynn Chadwick’s bronze Jubilee IV stand sentry at the entrance, greeting visitors on their way in.

This seems fitting, as it is the centenary of the internationally acclaimed sculptor.

Chadwick lived at Lypiatt, near Stroud, from 1958 until his death in 2003, and had close connections with Pangolin Editions in Chalford – the curators of this exhibition.

Chadwick’s work sits alongside pieces by Anthony Gormley, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Henry Moore and others.

Damien Hirst’s recently-finished work Fallen Angel, which depicts Mary Magdalene as a self-harmer and drug abuser, is being shown for the first time in public.

Rev Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester, said: “This exhibition not only gives people a chance to see the work of some of this country’s most important artists, but it also shows off this beautiful building in a different light.”

Crucible 2 continues until October 31.
