ON A COOL autumn evening, what better way to warm up than by basking in the warmth and energy of southern Spain, courtesy of the Sub Rooms, where the six artists who comprise Jaleo put on a breath-taking show.
Two guitarists, three dancers and one singer quickly proved that the spirit of flamenco has as much appeal in Stroud as it does in Seville, with the palmas (hand-clapping), foot stamping, singing and guitar playing producing a huge volume of sound, all performed with a passion that was electric.
The two female and one male dancer were captivating throughout, with the three combining for a particularly scintillating opening number to the second half. Not to be forgotten, the singer and guitarists completed an amazing team, with all six performers teaming up to maintain the energy and the complex rhythms that were a central feature throughout the show.
A Compas was all about confidence, technical mastery and showmanship, and what a fantastic showcase this proved to be. I doubt anyone went away unmoved by the sheer passion on display tonight, and Jaleo will have converted more than a few to the cause of flamenco. Bravo!
