THE team seeking to re-open The Brunel Rooms in Swindon town centre have applied for a premises licence to stay open as late as 4.30am and to host plays, boxing and wrestling, as well as live music and dance.

A newly-formed company called Brunel Rooms Swindon intends to reopen the nightclub, in Havelock Square, which closed as Liquid & Envy in November 2011 when the owners Luminar went bust.

The opening night has now been announced as Thursday, August 1.

But, before the venue can throw open its doors and run licensable activities, such as the sale of alcohol, the firm needs to secure a new premises licence, as it was revoked when Luminar went bust.

The application asks for opening hours from 10am to 1.30am between Sunday and Wednesday, and 10am to 4.30am between Thursday and Saturday.

Any sale of alcohol, showing of films, playing of live or recorded music, and dance performances would finish 30 minutes before the closing time.

If approved by Swindon Council, an “all night event” could also be held up to six times a calendar year, and alcohol, films, live music, recorded music and performances of dance could be provided from 10am to 6am.

On top of the usual nightclub activities, the firm has also asked to host plays from Monday to Sunday, between 10am and 11pm, and boxing or wrestling from Monday to Sunday, between 7pm and 11pm.

Jason Ranford, a director, said the team submitted the application after researching the opening times and activities provided by rival venues.

He said activities such as boxing were included on the application to allow The Brunel to be used for a wider range of activities in the community, although there were no plans to hold fights or wrestling at the moment.

He said some “big acts” would perform on the opening night and throughout the following weekend and the hope was there would be enough custom and interest to stay open until 4.30am on some days.

Jason said: “If numbers don’t warrant it being there, we will look at things differently.”

Emergency services and others, including those living or working within the vicinity, now have until June 28 to make any comments on the application to Swindon Council.

Coun Bob Wright (Lab, Central) said: “I’m pleased the place is opening up. I expect the police to consider public safety, but regarding the hours I’m not too concerned about that. We have all missed the old Brunel Rooms.”

Emma Faramarzi, the chairman of Swindon Federation of Small Businesses, said: “There’s no immediate houses around that area, it’s all businesses.

“And historically it’s been a nightclub for a long time. If they have got a robust door policy, there shouldn’t be any trouble outside.”

Police licensing officer Sian Kalynka said Wiltshire Police were studying the application.
