OLDER people living in rural areas around Stroud can now receive help getting online.
Computer trainer Melissa Briggs is working with the NHS to teach elderly people online skills.
“There are so many older people living isolated lives who, if they had the confidence to use email or the internet, could stay in touch with friends and family, order prescriptions, play games or research their family tree or local history,” said Melissa, of Stroud Computer Training.
Melissa has developed a training plan and is now working with the NHS to get funding for the scheme and to set up a referral system via GPs.
She is also talking to local councils and charities about additional support.
“I’ve been delighted at the support I’ve had so far – I’m also approaching Stroud businesses to sponsor a tablet computer to help those who can’t afford them have an opportunity which could be life changing,” said Melissa.
“For a lot of older people, especially those with arthritis, a tablet, such as an iPad, is much easier to use than a laptop.”
