WORK has kicked off on an indoor football facility at a former industrial unit at Brimscombe Port, in London Road.

Former Aston Villa and Forest Green Rovers footballer Steve Cowe and friend Clive Eckersall are busy transforming the unit with local tradesmen into Inside Football.

It will consist of three small courts separated by weighted curtains, which can be pulled back to create a 3G football pitch.

There will also be a reception area, a lounge area with sofas, a stand for spectators, toilets, changing rooms and a multi purpose room to serve as a classroom, party room or fitness area.

The pair, who run First Touch Coaching for children, hope the venue will become a hub for training, coaching and five-a-side leagues.

"Stroud needs this facility and children need somewhere inside to go and play and have fun whatever the weather," said Clive, who has played, managed and coached local football teams and is current chairman of Cashes Green Football Club.

"This opportunity came along and we couldn't resist.

"It has been a few years in the planning but with the help of local businessman Colin Cole and Mike Stratford the project is coming together.

"Our target market is vast - coaching for children, adults who enjoy playing in a competitive but friendly environment, clubs who need a training facility, corporate events, coaching for schools and a base to increase ladies involvement in football."

The Astroturf is being laid this week and the facility is due to open in the new year.

Steve, who also played for Swindon Town FC, said: "We have had a lot of support so far from the football community

"It is starting to gain momentum now and we are really looking forward to it opening."
