- ~Ode To The Subs~
what memories these walls must hold
this Cotswold-stone built home of old
whose ostentatious columns rise
like Grecian temples to the skies
to stand since eighteen thirty four
an idea from subscriptions born
with portico* to cover those
who would arrive in coach and droves
to sample such extreme decor
and dance upon this ballroom floor
before the djs and the clubs
the only gigs were at the Subs
-
you stood aloft through two world wars
yet outwardly look as before
and rise up like some Parthenon
at ev'ry show that's ever on
in sixty two and sixty three
the Beatles played reluctantly
they graced the stage before the fame
when many barely knew their name
those Saturdays that ran for years
and often ended up in tears
when no stilettos were allowed
and teddy boys made up the crowd
but now with backdrops lift and lights
we get to sample new delights
as people come from near and far
to moan about the upstairs bar
at council meetings where you pray
for heavy rock or classic play
where old and young with shoulders rub
within this home we call the Subs
