A 10KM run is not for the faint-hearted, but a seven-year-old boy from Cam has overcome this obstacle.

Rory Blackburn, seven, took on the 10km challenge on Saturday in order to raise money for Cam Hopton Primary School.

After setting a goal of raising £50, Rory has gone on to raise four times that amount with £200 so far.

His route on Saturday started and finished at the Dursley Market House and took him up the Dursley Road around Cam Pitch and the train station, and back through Jubilee park and Cam.

“I’m very excited about it,” Rory told the Gazette before his run.”

“I want to grow a pound so that I can help get our school a new outdoor classroom.

“I’m hoping to raise lots of money, we already have more than £50.

“My practice run was four and a half miles and was really fun, even in the rain.”

The Grow a Pound project is a scheme in which pupils were invited to borrow a pound from their parents to then spend to make baked goods or buy sponges to put on a sponsored car-wash to raise as much money as possible.

Rory’s persuaded Delta-Bikes in Dursley to discount some energy gels to assist him on his run, while his 10-year-old sister Jemima made and sold stress-relief balls.

His dad Andrew is immensely proud of Rory’s achievement.

“I had to try and slow him down so that he didn’t run out of energy, I’m absolutely amazed that he has done this.

“It is amazing what he has done, but I would say that because I’m his dad, but then I really don’t think every seven-year-old could do what he has done.

“I’m so proud of Rory for doing this. If I’m honest, I wasn’t sure he would be able to do the full distance without stopping.

“He did pick up a stitch after a mile and a half, and he was in a bit of pain with his hip on the last mile, but this didn’t deter him - Rory ran the whole way and even he managed a sprint to the finish outside Bank Cafe.

"He just kept going, and also kept smiling, which is typical of Rory.

“A few of his school friends turned out to cheer him on at Jubilee playing fields, Cam, and Littlecombe. And what better way to celebrate than a large fruit smoothie and a slice of cake!”

This could just be the start of Rory’s long-distance endeavours, who would love to run in the Olympics.

All the money raised from Rory’s 10km run goes to Cam Hopton Primary School Parent Teacher Association for the school’s new outdoor classroom and other new equipment.
