THE 76-year-old owner of a hair salon in Wotton has completed a sponsored zip-wire ride.

Marg Cole completed the feat two weeks ago to raise money for Stroud-based charity Allsorts, which supports families of children with disabilities or additional needs.

She took on the challenge with close friend Clare Le Vay, who met at the monthly Allsorts meetings for grandparents of disabled children.

They have raised £1,085 so far by riding on the longest zip line in Europe at Zip World in Bethesda, South Wales, which saw them soar 500 feet in the air at 100mph.

“All sorts do such wonderful work and have given me and Clare great support,” said Marg, who is well known as the owner of Scissor Scene in Wotton.

“So many of people have asked me how scared I was and how brave I must be but I just wasn’t nervous at all, it’s all quite exciting.

“My clients keep asking me if I’ll do something like this again but I think I may need to take a step back and start slowing down, I am 76 after all, but we shall see!

“I do find it exciting putting myself through things like this, every time I do something like this I say it is my last but then I find something else.”

This isn’t the first thrill-seeking mission that Marg has undertaken, she completed a wing-ride for her 60th birthday and took part in a sponsored abseil down the Merrywalks multi-storey car park in Stroud.

Clare said that this task was also to prove that “not all grandparents sit around and drink tea all the time”.

“We decided to do the zip wire because we wanted to show that Allsorts grandparents don’t sit around drinking tea all the time, but are fun, active and willing to give anything a go,” she said.

“We aren’t young, but we are young at heart and we hold Allsorts in our hearts because the charity has given us so much interest, support and friendship over the years and we want to do our bit to say thank you.”

Marg’s eight-year-old grandchild has severe cerebral palsy and requires a lot of additional help and support, while Clare’s grandchild also has cerebral palsy, but it is not quite so severe.
