Stroud’s homeless ate a free hot meal today thanks to an unusual team of cooks - an army regiment.

The 29th Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corp, based in South Cerney, brought their disciplined dining experience to the kitchen of Marah, a Stroud charity that provides free meals and advice for vulnerable adults at weekly drop-in sessions, on May 2.

Staff sergeant Merchant, who is a chef back at base, was leading the charge, and his regiment cooked up a barbecued feast of burgers and sausages.

They provided the meal, which took place in Stroud scout hut, free of charge for Marah.

“It’s great to do this kind work as it helps us connect to the communities around us,” said staff sergeant Merchant.

“And it means people realise the army isn’t just about shooting bad guys.”

One Marah volunteer said: “They’re a smashing group of lads - their help is really appreciated.”

Marah runs three drop-in sessions a week where vulnerable adults in Stroud can get a hot meal and chat to somebody.

The charity is currently looking for 100 donors to provide a meal a month at just £3.
