Festival Saturday activities across the town

Nailsworth Festival starts on Saturday, May 19, at 10am, in Mortimer Gardens, with entertainment for all age groups.

This includes Punch & Judy, juggling, the Nailsworth Community Choir, gypsy jazz and vintage music from the 40s.

There will also be buskers in Market Street.

Along with the entertainment there will be a craft event for children in the library, an exhibition on “Education in Nailsworth” in the Mortimer Room, a market and of course the annual duck race, in the river, besides Mortimer Gardens.

Later in the day Simon Bell will be giving an organ recital in St George’s Church.

Saturday, May 19, Town Hall, 8pm £16 Bar

Who could have predicted that a band, which hit the top of the charts over 55 years ago in 1961, with a song and style that were already 40 years out of date, would still be around in 2018, still playing the same style of music?

The band had a string of chart successes, notably with “You’re Driving Me Crazy”, which was Sir George Martin’s first ever number one hit, and followed by other top ten hits like “Home in Pasadena”, “The Charleston”, “Hard Hearted Hannah” and “The Black Bottom”.

The Tippett Quartet

Sunday, May 20, Christ Church, 7.30pm £12 Refreshments available

The Tippett Quartet has performed at the BBC Proms, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room.

They are often heard on Radio 3 and now they are coming to Nailsworth.

Votes for Women in the Cotswolds

Monday, May 21, Egypt Mill, 7.30pm £5 Bar

A talk by Dr Sue Jones author of “Votes for Women: Cheltenham and the Cotswolds”.

Sue lives in the Cotswolds and was awarded a PhD in the field of women’s suffrage.

The Gasworks Singers

Monday, May 21, St George’s Church, 7.30pm £6 Pay at the door, Bar

Gasworks Singers are a choir of 35 members of the 160-strong Gasworks Choir in Bristol.

Expect pop, soul and a passionate and prayerful performance!

Boldwood

Tuesday, May 22, Ruskin Mill, 7.30pm £12.

Formed in 2003 by accordionist Becky Price, Boldwood explores the repertoire of tunes from 17th and 18th century English collections.

The band specialises in bringing to life neglected gems in concert or on the dance floor.

Festival Tales

An opportunity to hear stories, poems and sketches from “Tell Tales”, Nailsworth’s creative writing group.

Comedy Night

Wednesday, May 23, Christ Church, 7.30pm £8

Building on the success of last year the 2018 Festival offers a three comedian line up for your enjoyment.

The show will be compered by Andy Kind, opened by Fran Garrity and headlined by Tony Vino.

This event is run as a partnership event with Churches Together in Nailsworth.

An Evening with Sir Richard Eyre

Thursday, May 24, Nailsworth C of E Primary School, 7.30pm £10 Bar

The theatre and film director, Sir Richard Eyre, will talk about working with actors and show clips from several of his films, including his most recent film of King Lear with Anthony Hopkins.

He has been the recipient of numerous directing awards.

Many will recall his stage musical, Guys and Dolls, and film, Notes on a Scandal, amongst others.

He was Director of the UK’s National Theatre between 1988 and 1997.

Withering Looks

Friday, May 25, Town Hall, 7.30pm £12, Bar

2018 is the 200th anniversary year of Emily Bronte’s birth. Withering Looks is an irreverent and hilarious theatre event to savour.

Latina Festivale

Saturday, May 26, Comrades Club, 8.00pm £10, Bar

Latina Festivale recreates the sizzling, scorching sounds of Latin America and the Caribbean with an uplifting sound which is inspiring and unifying, mixing salsa with other influences to bring you a fresh, funky and instant Latin house party experience.
