A handball team from Stroud High School secured a silver medal in the National Schools Handball League at Worcester Arena on Saturday, June 9.

The under 15s started the day confidently winning games against Chadwell Heath Academy (10-6) Rushcliffe School (8-1) and Oxclose School (7-1)

This secured the team a place in the semi-finals against Aylesbury High which they won 9-0 to secure a place in the final.

The final saw a fiercely contested match - Stroud High U15’s played a determined game from the outset, but eventually lost to Sale Grammar School from Manchester. The final score was 5-2.

As a testament to their success, only two years ago the same team came fifth in the U13 National Schools Competition, the improvement being a credit to the school and the team’s local coach Matt Durber.

The team had fantastic support on the day, headed up by Mr McShane, Stroud High’s headteacher and Mrs Fletcher, head of the PE department as well as the parents of the players.

Mr McShane reflected on the day saying “I am incredibly proud of the girl’s success and it reflects the huge commitment and training they make to the sport.

Stroud High School prioritises the engagement of young women in sport and is honoured to have such a high participation in handball, which is a new physical sport for girls”
