FIREFIGHTERS from Yate, Thornbury and Kingswood raced to put out a large grass fire in Wickwar last Tuesday.

Four crews in total were dispatched at 3.18pm following reports of the blaze in a field off the B4509 near the quarry.

On arrival, crews were met with a large fire measuring roughly 300m by 300m and used three high pressure hose reels and beaters to tackle it.

They were assisted by a farmer in creating a fire break using a plough.

An Avon Fire and Rescue spokesman said it was believed the fire was started accidentally.
