IT will be all change at the market this week as, despite some attempted negotiation, we are being kicked out of Swan Lane.

We are now no longer able to trade in the lane at all.

This is going to mean a fair few changes up that end of the market with the olive stall moving to the stall next to the bench where we normally have a plant stall.

Ori the Artisan Baker, will move outside the recently closed Toy Shop (thank goodness!), meaning for now they can trade alongside the Lavender Garden and Ascott Gardens.

Unfortunately, it means moving the plant stalls elsewhere probably down to the bottom of Union Street with the Crow’s Nest, Salt Bakehouse and Tuga Pastries.

Protecting the market from the whims of new traders is an incredibly tricky process.

To my mind the main attraction for being in that area of town is to be within the market area on market days, thus having direct access to the huge numbers visiting the market.

If these new shopkeepers had their way the stalls would be removed from outside their shops and windows and the market would suffer.

Thank goodness for the generosity of Iceland, Saymor and the other shops who continue to let us set up outside their windows; without them things would be very different!

Stroud farmers’ market runs every Saturday from 9am to 2pm in the Cornhill market place and surrounding streets.
