Merrywalks shopping centre is getting a new name - and Stroud’s schoolchildren are being asked to choose it.

Dransfield Properties, which is overhauling the shopping centre to the tune of £12m, is challenging primary school pupils to come up with a new name.

So far children from The Rosary Catholic Primary, Uplands Community Primary and Stroud Valley Community have been asked to find one by looking at the history of the site.

The competition closes on Friday, October 12 when a panel of judges will decide on the chosen name for the development which will be announced later this autumn.

Work has already started on the centre, beginning with the multi-storey car park, which is expected to be completed by November.

Dransfield has also released images of how the centre will look when complete, including an artist’s impressions of the new entrance to the shopping centre from King Street and a welcoming foyer for those arriving via the bus station.
