ON October 11 an uplifting and poignant evening will take place at Gloucester Cathedral to mark 100 years since the end of WW1, the formation of the RAF, and to recognise the contribution made by people from all over Gloucestershire.

Gloucestershire Salutes will be compered by the BBC’s Steve Knibbs and the evening is set to include beautiful music, poignant readings and thoughtful reflection.

The first half of the event will focus on remembrance, acknowledging the journey of those who served, who sacrificed and survived.

Distinguished guests will be speaking to include BAFTA Fellowship recipient and war correspondent, Kate Adie CBE.

The second half of the evening will feature uplifting and rousing music with the theme of hope and celebration.

Included in the programme are the D-Day Darlings, fresh from ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent and Gloucestershire Symphony Orchestra, supported by Gloucestershire Police Male Voice Choir.

All proceeds from the event will help fund the ABF: The Soldiers’ Charity and Alabaré’s Gloucestershire Homes for Veterans.

Event organiser and one of the founders for Gloucestershire Homes for Veterans, Tony Raybone, said that the evening offered an opportunity to remember those whose names are marked on Gloucestershire war memorials.

“This is a marvellous opportunity in this significant centenary year, to honour those who have gone before but also to look to the future with optimism,” Mr Raybone said.

“A chance also to thank the people of Gloucestershire for their countless sacrifices over the past 100 years in conflicts.

“War memorials in every village ,town or city in our County attest to this - each name - a family’s loss.”
