MEMBERS of the public came to the aid of an elderly man who is reported to have been assaulted in Stroud town centre this morning.

After the assault a 26 year-old man of no fixed address was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage.

Witnesses to the assault have described seeing an altercation in King Street between the elderly man, and a woman and younger man at around 11am this morning.

It is believed an older man was hit on the head and was later seen on the floor.

Members of the public are believed to have rushed to help.

A police spokesperson said: "We were called to King Street in Stroud at 10.56am following reports of an assault.

"It's believed that the assault took place outside of Andrews Estate Agents.

An elderly man was taken to Stroud hospital by police officers so that his injuries could be assessed.

The 26-year-old man remains in custody at this time.
