The area's best performing schools have been revealed.

Figures released by the Department for Education show how well schools did in this summer's GCSE results.

This is the second year schools have been ranked using the Attainment 8 grading system after changes were made to how exams are assessed.

Attainment 8 is an average score across eight subjects taken at GCSE, which includes English and maths.

Progress 8 marks the progress made between the end of key stage 2 and the end of key stage 4, compared to pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 2.

Stroud High School topped the charts with a Progress 8 score of 1.12 and an Attainment 8 of 75, both well above the national average.

Headteacher Mark McShane said: "We are delighted that the progress students make at Stroud High School is as strong as anywhere in the country.

"Whilst the students themselves deserve all of the credit it is a real team effort and shows the potential for success in a community built on strong relationships.

"The staff across the school work incredibly hard to create an educational experience which will prepare young people ready to make a difference.

Along with all the students they make the school a vibrant place to be everyday."

Marling and Thomas Keble also ranked highly amongst Stroud's schools.

Thomas Keble headteacher Miss Maunder said she was 'delighted' with the new league tables.

"Our approach of quality first teaching, high quality pastoral provision and inclusive Stretch and Challenge has resulted in high achievement across a range of areas and consistency across all subjects, producing the school’s highest ever GCSE results despite the challenges of the new, harder, GCSE examinations.

"Our staff are firmly committed to helping every child to aspire to achieve as highly as possible and we are delighted that our class of 2018 were able to do so," she said.
