A BOURNEMOUTH charity is hoping to feed two hundred families in need this Christmas.

The Bournemouth Basket Brigade is a volunteer-led initiative that delivers food to families living in poverty across Bournemouth and Poole.

It was founded in 2015 when it provided food for 25 families and last year the charity saw 60 volunteers deliver 200 food baskets.

It is inspired by the International Basket Brigade set up by The Tony Robbins Foundation dedicated to feeding those in need by providing baskets of donated food and household items.

Each basket costs £15 to make and deliver and will feed a family of four.

This year the charity hopes to raise £3,000 and gather a total of 80 volunteers who will take 200 baskets to 200 families.

Volunteers will pack the baskets at St Michael's C Of E Primary School on December 22 before delivering them.

Kristy Kurowski said: “The Bournemouth Basket bridge came about after a group of friends attended the Birmingham event in 2014 and decided that it would be great to replicate the event in Bournemouth and give something back to our local community.

“We are busy planning and preparing all year round, but the actual event itself is just for Christmas."

Bournemouth restaurant Ojo Rojo has also pledged its support and will supply chickens for the hampers, as well as the vegan alternatives for those families that don't eat meat.

The eatery is also holding a fundraiser on November 29 from 7.30pm and will be donating money for every festive margarita sold on the night.

Bournemouth Basket Brigade is seeking volunteers to help out as well as local businesses to donate items.
