Rodborough's new parish councillor has spoken out about how support from the community while his daughter underwent major surgery inspired him to get involved in public life.

Robin Layfield was elected for the parish's north ward earlier this month and his daughter, Edie, completed a kidney transplant two years ago.

"My daughter was very ill - and, along with friends and family, the parish council was so supportive," he told the SNJ.

Edie saw success this summer in her battle back to fitness since the operation when she competed in the British Transplant Games.

Her efforts in athletic events like the 50 metre sprint and an obstacle course earned her a bronze medal - and she raised a massive £1,565.

"Now she is in a much more stable condition, I want to give back to everyone," said Robin.

"I want to make sure anyone living in Rodborough gets the same support that we had."

Robin, a freelance web developer, has been living in Rodborough with his family on Bath Road for the past ten years.

He moved to Stroud from London where he had been living on a canal boat.

"It wasn't exactly a practical environment to bring up children.

"Stroud has proved much better, it's a beautiful town.

"The things that stand out for me in Rodborough are the fete, easter egg hunt and, of course, the Prince Albert. It's got such a distinctive identity as a pub."
