Conservatives in Stroud want Theresa May to stay on as Prime Minister, according to the chair of the party's local branch.

"Whilst the current Brexit deal does not tick all of the boxes for everyone, the majority of our members think that a change of leadership would not make any difference to the deal and that it would be very damaging to the party," Sharon Sugars, chair of Stroud Conservative Association, has told the SNJ.

Ms Sugars said she has seen "clear support" for the Prime Minister after the unveiling of the UK's withdrawal agreement with the EU last week, prompting calls from some Tory MPs for a change of leadership.

"There is a lot of respect for her tenacity, grit and determination," Ms Sugars said.

"I was also on a conference call with the Prime Minister last Friday, along with all other constituency chairs, and again there was nothing but support for her."

She also said that, if the Conservatives had the Stroud seat, she would not have asked their MP to send a letter of no confidence in the Prime Minister.

"Absolutely not.

"The strength of any party lies within its ability to unite and work as a team.

"Our current candidate, Siobhan Baillie, speaking at a recent event also supports this view."
