A farmers' market could come to Stonehouse next year.

Though still in its planning stages, a market could be up and running in the town by late spring 2019 after the brains behind Stroud's own market showed interest in helping, according to the man spearheading the project.

Resident Glen Gogerly recently convened a meeting of Stonehouse's small businesses with the FSB, leading to the idea for the farmers' market.

He did so while he was still UKIP's candidate for Stroud, but he recently resigned from the party over the appointment of far-right activist Tommy Robinson as an adviser to its leader (bit.ly/2EwMqRs).

"We want to bring in stalls that compliment the high street and that will bring extra footfall," he explained.

"I contacted Kardien who runs the Stroud farmers' market for he has the knowledge and expertise to get this project up and running.

"We had a very productive meeting and will take the opportunity to work together.

"Stonehouse is a lovely place to live in with a community that really cares. It just needed someone to drive the idea forward."

Mr Gogerly's pushing of the project comes amid wider discussion on how to help the Stroud district's market towns.

Parking charges in Stonehouse and Painswick may have their parking charges scrapped under a district council review.
