Residents of Firgrove Residential Home in Yate have been getting in to the Christmas spirit by having a surprise visitor.

The home welcomed Dermot the Donkey last week as residents got to feed and pet the guest.

It is part of a scheme to bring a special visitor every week in the build-up to special day.

The Manager of Firgrove Rachel Brain, revealed that everyone really enjoyed welcoming Dermot to the house.

“The residents loved having him in the lounges with them and thought his Christmas hat was wonderful,” she said.

“We love welcoming visitors to Firgrove House and have a very busy activity programme.

“It was a busy day and we also welcomed the Brownies to join us for Christmas Carols.

“Dermot is a specially trained therapy donkey from Danny Donkey & Pals Assisted Therapy Donkeys and his soft and gentle nature made him a great Christmas visitor for our residents.”

Rachel then told how Dermot helped some of the residents to talk about some memories from their earlier years.

“A Resident commented that it reminded them of when they worked in the countryside,” she said.

“Another client remembered being a land girl in the area, even cycling past Firgrove House each morning.

“He was wonderful, seeing him really made their day.”

Last year the Gazette reported that a reindeer made an appearance at the care home as part of the Christmas preparations.

Alethea Mizen, Office Manager at the home said: “We have events running every week and it is just nice to spread the festive cheer amongst the residents.
