To say it has been a whirlwind few months for Jen Gash would be something of an understatement.

The Thornbury painter and occupational therapist made it on to Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year following a chance application.

From there she advanced through the rounds, won the grand final at Greenwich Park, took a trip to Macedonia following a commission from the Imperial War Museum and finally unveiled her painting in a ceremony at the museum.

“It’s an awful lot to digest,” said Jen.

As a prize for winning Jen was awarded a £10,000 commission to create a painting depicting landscape of the Battle of Kosturino, fought in the First World War.

Speaking about the trip Jen said: “It’s a fascinating story to follow.

“I was really pleased with the painting and it takes quite a lot for me to say that.”

“It was really well received so I was relieved.”

After realising her usual studio space would not be large enough to complete the painting, Jen called on the help of Tytherington farmer Richard Cornock.

Dairy farmer Richard gave Jen space in one of his cow sheds. Behind the scenes footage of Jen completing the painting is available on his Youtube channel The Funky Farmer.

Lack of space is not the only challenge Jen’s painting has faced in recent years.

Three years ago her daughter Jillie left Castle school and went to the pupil referral unit at Downend after suffering from depression.

Jen spent a year looking after Jillie and her driving back and forth, with painting taking a backseat during this time.

“She’s doing pretty well,” said Jen. “People underestimate how tough these things are.”

Reflecting on the process as a whole Jen said: “I learnt a lot about myself as a painter and how I work best. Thank you to the community, my friends and family for being so supportive.”
