DOWN Ampney village came together to plant an oak tree to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice in 1918 which signalled the end of World War One.

Locals, including members of the Parish Council, vicar Rev John Swanton, Councillor David Fowles and pupils from Down Ampney Primary School joined together to plant the tree, which will be known as The Peace Tree, on the village green. School pupils took charge of the planting.

Local historian, Pamela Varey, provided information on villagers who lost their lives in World War One.

Down Ampney Primary School head teacher, Adam Clark, said: “I was honoured to be asked if the children would be involved in the tree planting. One of the special things about a village school is the positive impact the children are able to have on and with their local community.”

A Year 6 pupil added: “I was really happy to be asked to be involved in planting the tree to remember the people who have died for us.”
