The instalment of the defibrillator next to the Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields near Abbotswood was another step made to ensuring that there is easy access to life-saving equipment around the whole area.

This installation was Dodington Parish Council’s second, with Yate Town Council also being heavily involved in the spread of defibrillators across the Yate and Sodbury.

There are now over 20 defibrillators throughout the area, with a full comprehensive list on the council website.

These defibrillators can cost anywhere in the region of £400 to upwards of £1000.

The are with the most defibrillators in close proximity is understandably Yate Shopping Centre, with seven being placed around the centre.

Security staff are first aid trained and saved a visitors life using one of the defibrillators last year.

Andrew Lowrey, the centre manager said: “The safety of our customers, visitors and staff is very important to us and as such we ensure that the centre team is trained to a very high standard in emergencies and emergency response.

“Last year our security team attended a non-responsive person and the use of the defibrillator resulted in saving the life of the customer. We have worked closely with Yate Town Council who have produced a list of the defibrillators locations in the town centre.”

The Mayor of Yate, Cllr John Ford added: “Yate Town Council welcome the installation of lifesaving equipment in the Town,”

“In addition to those defibrillators already placed in the town, we can offer Yate Town Council properties and venues to external organisations wishing to provide and fund defibrillators.

“A cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time and we would encourage residents to attend a first aid training session. Organisations such as St Johns Ambulance offer this service.

“Many of these sites are in high footfall areas and allow relatively easy access to equipment should it be required in an emergency, saving precious minutes in helping those who experience cardiac arrest.”
