FORMER newspaper photographer David Ireland has been dusting off his collection of pictures taken during a career with the local press in Gloucestershire.

They form an everyday record of local life, but also include visits to the area by the royals and celebrities.

Mr Ireland, who lives in Cam, started work at the Gloucestershire Gazette in 1948 when he was 15 years old. The paper was then independently owned by the Bailey family.

It, along with its stablemates the Stroud News and Journal and Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard, are now published by Newsquest Media Group.

Mr Ireland's photographs were taken in the areas covered by all three newspapers, and include the era when he travelled to jobs on his bicycle or by public transport.

He retired at the age of 60 in 1993.

We are grateful to Mr Ireland for sharing his beautiful photographs with our readers.

This first batch of his photographs covers celebrity visits to the county.

Look out for more Mr Ireland's albums on this website.
