An old banger heading off from Birmingham to Benidorm soon as part of a Stroud family's efforts to raise money for cancer research is taking shape.

Dean Ives, his brother, Paul Cooke, his brother-in-law, Richard Niblett, and friend Richard Collinson have been hard at work renovating an old Saab they will be driving across Europe in May in aid of charity Cancer Research UK.

The family's cross-country adventure comes after Dean lost his mother-in-law, Lorna Dalton, and father, Robert Rigglesford, to the disease.

They have now added a fresh coat of red paint - Robert was a firefighter for the Red Arrows in Kemble, so the family are going to give their banger, donated to them for the challenge, a lick of red paint in his memory.

"The trip is approximately two and a half thousand miles," explained Paul.

"We're starting in Birmingham, going down to Dover to get to France.

"We'll pass through Germany and Switzerland, where we'll attempt the Stelvio Pass, then drop into Italy and Monaco, where we will do the F1 circuit, before driving through into Barcelona.

"We're starting on May 12 and hope to be in Benidorm by May 17."

The family have raised £350 so far and hope to get to £2,000 before May.
