Police and emergency services have revealed that they caught 14 people not wearing a seatbelt in one day at the weekend.

A Special Constabulary operation, in conjunction with Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service, resulted in 14 motorists being found not wearing a seatbelt while driving in Gloucester on Sunday 17 March.

Officers and police cadets were stationed on St Oswald's Road and ushered vehicles into Tesco car park when possible offences were spotted.

A total of 115 vehicles were pulled over.

Six drivers, five front seat passengers and three rear seat passengers had not belted up. All were given the option of being reported to receive a fine or taking part in the acclaimed "Wheeled Respect" educational course that was on offer in the car park.

Among the other offences detected, two people were reported for using a mobile phone while driving and now face fines and points on their licences, an uninsured van was seized, two people were reported for driving vehicles with no MOT and another person was reported for driving an untaxed car.

Jo Arnold, lead for Safe and Social Driving in the county, said: "Many thanks to the special officers, police cadets, regular officers and fire officers who ran this operation.

"There was a surprising number of people driving without seatbelts, which highlights the importance of a campaign like this.

"The course offered to those motorists on site really aims to demonstrate how devastating factors like not wearing a seatbelt can be and I'm sure those who took part will have learned a valuable lesson that will change their behaviour.

"This campaign will continue all week, with partners from across Gloucestershire looking to raise awareness and deter people from driving without wearing a seatbelt.

"Picking up other offences like drivers using mobile phones show how valuable these operations can be in delivering safe and social driving in the county, one of the strands of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner's Police and Crime Plan."
