As the Brexit debate rumbles on Stroud residents have had their say on the situation.

Many, including leader of Stroud District Council Doina Cornell, joined took part in a demonstration in London on Saturday.

Around one million people took part in the ‘Put It To The People’ march, including eight coach loads from Gloucestershire.

Cllr Cornell wore a placard with the names of people she was representing, including Stroud MP David Drew.

Responding to the march he said: “I know many Stroud people marched on Saturday and I have received hundreds of emails over the last few days, including many requests for Article 50 be revoked.

“I share their frustration with this Brexit shambles and hope Parliament can now find a positive way forward.

“Parliament should now debate credible alternatives to prevent no deal or a damaging Tory Brexit – including a closer economic relationship with a customs union and protection of common rights as well as now legislating for a public vote.

“Revocation Article 50 would have to be in the context of a final choice between revocation and leaving with no deal and we are not yet at that stage.”

At the time of writing13,477 from the Stroud constituency had signed a petition calling for Article 50 to be revoked and for the UK to remain in the EU.

The petition has received well over 5.7million signatures.

Parliament is forced to consider all petitions that get more than 100,000 signatures for debate.

When asked for Theresa May’s view on the petition, a No 10 spokeswoman said Mrs May worried failing to deliver Brexit would cause “potentially irreparable damage to public trust”.

She said: “The Prime Minister has long been clear that failing to deliver on the referendum result would be a failure of our democracy and something she couldn’t countenance.

“The Prime Minister has said many times she will not countenance revoking Article 50.”
