Last week Mr Butterell wrote on behalf of farmers in our constituency asking Sir Geoffrey Cliff-Edge Brown MP how his party proposed to replace the subsidy our farmers currently receive from the EU.

He wrote in very measured terms - many whose livelihoods are so directly threatened might not be so calm.

The National Farmers Union talks in terms of a catastrophe in the event of a disorderly Brexit, and has expressed the hope that the period up to October 31st will be used "constructively".

Taking as a guide the conduct in the last three years of those who were supposed to govern us, fat chance of that.

Central to the magical thinking of Brexiteers are trade deals with the likes of the USA and Australia, threatening our beef and poultry farmers with imports produced to lower food standards and therefore lower costs than we have in the UK.

Good news for our farmers, and for us as consumers?

Eat up your battery-reared, hormone-boosted beef, children!

Or how about some yummy chlorinated chicken?
