Dear readers, you may remember me, Pub Spy. I visited many of the region’s finest watering holes to pen reviews for this esteemed publication a couple of years ago and then I vanished as quick as a downed pint. You may have been wondering where I went, or perhaps you didn’t care at all (I’ll bet on the latter), but I’ll tell you anyway: I have been fulfilling my dream of travelling the globe trainspotting and I must say I had a great time and managed to review many pubs along the way.

Anyway, I’m back in the Cotswolds now and delighted to say that Pub Spy is resurrected – and I couldn’t wait to get started because, throughout my globetrotting, I craved the great food and drink of the pubs of Gloucestershire.

For my first return review, it seemed apt to try somewhere new and with a foreign flavour, so I opted for Galgos Latino, which has replaced one of my favourite old haunts, the Greyhound, at the corner of Lansdown and High Street in Stroud.

Opening earlier this month under new management and after an attractive makeover, I was eager to see whether Galgos would live up to the hype. Two sisters from Venezuela, Angela and Oriana, have given the place a bright and cheerful South American-inspired feel and, on entering the bar/restaurant (can it be classed as a pub? I’m saying yes!), I found that the Latin American vibe of uplifting music, friendly staff and vibrant colours instantly put a smile on my face.

I was there for lunch and found there was a small but perfectly-formed menu. I chose the pastelitos (£8), a Cuban pastry dish with chicken filling, with a side of chips (£3), or papas fritas as they are named at Galgos.

I was delighted by the meal, which had a lovely combination of flavours and spices and was the perfect portion size.

For drinks, there are a range of options available, from cocktails, coffees and juices to beers, and I went for the latter in the form of a pint of Estrella Galicia, a Spanish tipple which I found crisp and satisfying.

For dessert (£6), I ordered the dark chocolate tequeños which was complemented with vanilla ice cream and absolutely amazing.

As I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, I thoroughly recommend Galgos Latino and would encourage anyone to try this new venue.

With fantastic food and drinks at a reasonable price, and a fun Latino atmosphere, this new ‘pub’ is a welcome contrast to some of the more traditional offerings in the region and I have no doubt Galgos will be a success.

Galgos Latino is open from Thursday to Sunday. See https://www.facebook.com/pg/galgoslatino/posts/ for more.
