Yate has a new Mayor, after Cllr John Ford’s time in the role ended last week.

Cllr Ford had been Mayor since 2017 after succeeding Cllr Tony Davis.

Now though, Cllr Tomasin, who has formed a part of Yate Town Council since 2015, will take on the role until 2021.

He was unanimously elected by the council at a special event on May 14.

Karl was born in Croydon, but moved around the UK as his father was a customs officer at numerous airports.

When old enough, Cllr Tomasin got himself a job in Safeway stores and moved to the store in Yate in 1992.

He met local girl Wendy, got married and had three children here in Yate.

His three children, attended Tyndale Primary School and later Brimsham Green School.

Karl was a school governor at Tyndale and when the infant and junior schools merged he became Chair of Governors.

He left his job at Safeway over 20 years ago and has worked at DHL ever since.

Former Mayors and family members and friends attended the event at Poole Court to see Cllr Tomasin take over the role.

When speaking about the opportunity, Cllr Tomasin revealed it was a great feeling to have been elected to the position.

“I consider it a great privilege that I have been elected to lead the council over the next couple of years,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to the many challenges and new opportunities that may come along over the next few years.

“We currently have many projects which are at various stages of completion, which we are eager to move to a conclusion in order to benefit our residents.

“Fortunately, I am not on my own and with the excellent and strong support from our staff, fellow councillors and the local community.

“Together we can achieve this.”

Apart from chairing meetings and ceremonial activities the Mayor is keen to be invited to community events and to help groups with fundraising.

He will also present flowers to celebrate couple's 60th wedding anniversaries.
