A CASHES Green resident was so dismayed at the quality of grass cutting in front of her home that she took this photo of a dog standing in the newly cut turf, with grass up to his middle.

Charlotte Watkins said the communal lawn in middle of The Beagles was ‘unkept, looks awful and is forgotten’.

But Stroud District Council said the situation would be swiftly resolved, as they have just taken delivery of four new mowers.

Mike Hammond, Stroud District Council’s Head of Community Services said: “Due to losing Revenue Support Grant from Government, the council is having to identify ongoing savings.

“Changes to the contract were publicised last year, with grass cutting now taking place every three to four weeks instead of every two – saving £40,000 per year.

“This came in midway through the cutting season last year when grass growth was restricted by the very hot, dry weather.

“At this time of year grass is growing at its fastest rate and the old ride-on cylinder mowers, which have come to the end of their useful life, tend to tear the grass rather than cut it.

“We have now replaced those mowers with four new rotary mowers, so there should be a huge difference in the quality of the cut,” he added.
