I WAS able to stay on site all my two week stay.

One returning holiday maker said with obvious and delight.

His hotel may have been marvellous but every meal – all twenty eight of them in the same establishment.

No attempt to explore the interesting locality. Then there is the other approach. Remain on the beach, closely surrounded by other sun seeking mortals. Their bellies and bottoms are probably as unattractive as mine. Then there is the sand. It gets everywhere and before tentatively treading into the water a slimy substance at foot level needs to be negotiated. I refer to the appropriately name sea-weed. Before these far from delightful pleasures can be indulged in one has to cover oneself in a greasy potion to avoid sun burn.

We tried this one day on our recent Greek holiday. Penny had to bag a spot by 8.30am. Happily we left at 11.30am for more exploring and to enjoy the delights of Parga.

Of course we have to endure a few duds but also found some absolute delights. Some confectioneries have been sampled that make parkin seem a gastronomical delight but other lardy (or dripping) cake memories have been easily exceeded elsewhere.

Excursions into the resort area are always worthwhile and an opportunity to visit the now free country of Albania could not be missed. Beach and all-inclusive holidays have their place but mixing them with some exploring and appreciation of the local area can bring so much more. Of course each individual holiday maker will have their own agenda, but please do not limit yourself to sun or pool. Culture has much to offer and local cuisine can be outstanding. Next time you travel be brave.
