STROUD is set to get its first cat café - where people will be able to enjoy a drink and play with friendly felines at the same time.

Work is well under way to turn 27 High Street into El Gato’s feline friendly coffee house, which will open next month.

The application was put forward by Debbie Hicks, who hopes to introduce customers to the ‘therapeutic’ effects of drinking a cappuccino in the company of some furry friends.

A post on El Gato’s Facebook page says: “There are so many cat lovers out there, but not everyone can enjoy the company of cats if they live in a place where cats are not allowed.

“Cat cafes enable visitors to share the company of cats in a therapeutic and relaxing environment.”

The café will become home to four cats who are happy with people and other cats.

There will be a set of house rules for customers to ensure the cats can maintain a relaxed and care-free lifestyle and do not become overwhelmed by attention.

The cafe will also be working with local cat rescue centres to help find forever homes for rescue cats and will also fundraise for local cat rescue centres.

Once it's launched, El Gato's will be open Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 5pm.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, then you might like to know that El Gato’s are now hiring café assistants, who they say will need to give the cats plenty of ‘cuddles and attention’.
