A fire at the Premier Inn near Cribbs Causeway has been extinguished after burning for more than 40 hours.

The fire broke out at around 2pm on Wednesday afternoon at the hotel near the M5. It was put out around 8.30am this morning (Friday).

All hotel guests have been accounted for and an investigation into the cause of the fire will now begin.

The A4018 (Cribbs Causeway Road) remains closed in both directions between Clifton Rugby Club and Lysander Road. Part of the hotel collapsed into the road on Thursday.

The fire service yesterday took to social media to allay fears about cladding.

"There were also some concerns over the cladding. We can confirm this was non-combustible Rockwool cladding that contained no ACM and in no way impacted on the spread of fire or our response to the incident."

The cause of the fire is as yet unknown.

Avon and Somerset Police declared a major incident at 5pm on Wednesday. This was due to the level of resources required by emergency services at a time when they are already stretched following the Extinction Rebellion protests in Bristol city centre.

Residents were asked to close doors and windows where possible due to the smoke from the incident.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "A major incident was declared shortly after 5pm, following the fire at the Preimer Inn, Cribbs Causeway.

"This is due to the level of resources required by emergency services at a time when they are already stretched following protest activities in Bristol city centre this week.

"Crews from Weston, Bath, Bedminster, Patchway, Southmead and Kingswood remain in attendance and are using three turntable ladders to deliver water to the incident.

"All local residents should keep doors and windows closed where possible due to the low smoke plume.

"Road closures in the area remain in place. Please avoid the area where possible."
