Improvements to Thornbury Sailing Club are on hold following a dispute with the Environment Agency that could cost the club £2,500.

The club, based in Oldbury-on-Severn, is hoping to upgrade its septic tank system to comply with the latest Environment Agency requirements.

In order to install the new system, the club needs to provide evidence of a permit to discharge.

A permit costs £2,534 but the club maintains they already have one from the time they installed their initial system back in 1976.

Sue Leat, commodore at Thornbury Sailing Club, said: “The original permit to discharge records were subsequently passed to the National Rivers Authority, and then onto the Environment Agency.

“To complete the new installation the club has requested evidence of such a permit. Communication with the Environment Agency has clearly indicated that no effort has been made to make such a search of its record. The club maintains that the original permit is still applicable.”

Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall visited the club last month and has raised the situation with South Gloucestershire Council.

He said: “Thornbury Sailing Club is much loved in our community.

“Together we are pushing for a solution to the current issues the club is experiencing and will make sure this local club continues to thrive.”

The Environment Agency was not available to comment.
