A milk tanker crash closed the M4 between Swindon and Chippenham last night.

Police, fire and ambulance services were all called to the scene after the tanker hit the central reservation.

Pictures taken at the scene by Wiltshire Police's traffic officers showed the shocking nature of the crash, with the vehicle jacknifed over the motorway safety barrier. Officers said there had been no major injuries.

The road was closed westbound for around three hours as the tanker is removed and debris cleared from the motorway, it reopened at around 7:30 this morning.

The M4 remained shut westbound between junctions 16 and 17. Two lanes of the eastbound carriageway were shut while emergency repairs were carried out to the central reservation.
