A communication trail has been created in Thornbury to help people learn Makaton signs.

The trail has been developed by New Siblands School, whose students often face communication difficulties, alongside Thornbury Chamber of Commerce and Better Communication Bristol.

Participants must make their way around the centre of Thornbury looking for the posters that have been displayed in shops.

Each poster displays a word, a corresponding Makaton symbol and a QR code. Some posters are displayed in shop windows and others are hidden inside the shop.

Scanning the QR code will reveal a video that will teach you how to sign that word. You must then write the correct word next to each corresponding number.

Trail maps and entry sheets are available from Finishing Touches or Thornbury Library from today (Monday). They can also be downloaded here.

All correct sheets returned by September 6 will be entered into a prize draw to win Thornbury Gift Vouchers.

Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order.
