Minchinhampton Old 5 South Cerney 1

South Cerney Seniors’ woes away from home continued as Minchinhampton inflicted yet another heavy defeat on their visitors. Only the final pair of John Hayward and Chris Huckle, with a 2&1 victory had any success, but it wasn't enough to overcome the earlier losses by: John Abbott/Mac Cannons (3&2), Phil Waller/Terry Barry (5&4), Ian Marshall/Gerry Tucker (6&5), Phil Stansfield/Colin Bulley (3&2).

The unluckiest pair on the day were Captain Andy Taylor playing with John Carrington who came up against Minchinhampton’s five-handicapper, Chris Old, in scintillating form; despite both shooting below their handicap in a high-class game in which every hole was won with a gross par or birdie, they went down 5&4.

South Cerney 2 Brickhampton 4

Two days later, and even the home form appeared to desert South Cerney as the visitors from Brickhampton claimed a decisive victory, albeit by the narrowest of margins in most of the games.

Gerry Tucker/Phil Stansfield (2&1) and Ewan McCall/Andy Hugill (1 up) were the winning pairs, but unfortunately, the other four pairs all lost in close games: Andy Taylor/John Whittaker (1 down), Matthew Smith/Paul Taylor (1 down), Colin Bulley/Ian Newland (1 down), Ian Haslam/Dave Fletcher (2&1).

July Stableford

In the latest Stableford qualifier, Pete Barnes with 38 points off 12 won Division 1 from Guy Montezuma who garnered 36 points off 18. Meanwhile in Division 2, Dave Miles had the round of the day, and his 41 points off 20 ensured that Eric Roberts’ best round of the year (36 points off 27) remained well beaten in the runner-up spot.

Naunton Downs Seniors Open

Given the Seniors’ poor form away from home in matches, it is surprising that individual Seniors have performed well in away Opens this year, and last week’s trip to Naunton Downs was no exception. Pride of place went to Frankie Shaw whose 39 points off 20 gave him a share at the top of the leaderboard, only losing out on first place on countback. Guy Montezuma was also among the prizes, winning the ‘Closest to the pin in two’ contest on the 17th hole.
