THE A46 between Painswick and Brockworth will be closed for two days for surface dressing from August 3 to 4.

The work will take place during the day between 7am and 7pm over the weekend, to prevent disruption to commuters.

Back in April this year, crews visited the road to patch large clusters of potholes and carriageway damage in preparation for surface dressing. Patching is a more intensive repair where crews cut around the uneven section and replace with a large piece of flat tarmac.

Now, crews are returning with specialist surface dressing kit to seal the surface, extending its life and restoring grip to 50,750 square metres of carriageway.

This process can only be used in warmer drier weather, which is why the work will be done during the day.

Surface dressing only takes place on roads in good overall condition and is often used to extend the life of the highway, protecting the road against frost and water damage.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways at Gloucestershire County Council said: “We appreciate a weekend closure is inconvenient, however surface dressing is a cost efficient way to spend the £150 million investment we have made into the county’s roads.

"Please plan your journeys around this work; we will try to give local businesses and properties access when it is safe to do so.”

What’s the diversion route? (suitable for HGVs):

From the south extent of the closure take the A4173 and continue along the road in the direction of Gloucester. At the roundabout with the A38 take the third exit and continue via the A38 Finlay Road and Eastern Avenue. At the roundabout with the A417 Corinium Avenue take the second exit and continue in the direction of Brockworth. At the next roundabout take the second exit and continue along the A417. At the junction with the A46 turn right. Diversion is the same in reverse.
