News from Stroud's Help a Hedgehog Hospital.

This summer has turned out to be first wet, then dry then scorching!

Hedgehogs will be looking for food and water, so don’t forget to make sure a shallow bowl of water is available if they are visiting your garden.

A small hole in the fence can ensure they are able to move from one garden to another.

Some dry cat food will keep them coming back, especially as in dry weather their natural food of beetles, earthworms and larvae will be hard to find.

Some of the patients admitted this summer include whole families whose mothers gave birth in odd places – a barbecue lid, under decking, and compost heaps are favourite places, as are under sheds.

If you are moving or dismantling a shed or decking, keep an eye out for nests and try to catch the mother first - the babies will thrive if they are with their mother but are hard to rear if they are tiny and alone.

One fortunate hog was spotted down a cattle grid in Minchinhampton, unable to escape, but happily unharmed, and after a few days was able to go on his way, fed and watered.

We had a good day at the wonderful Stroud Nature Festival and other events this summer include Gatcombe which keeps us busy for the three days.

We’re always happy to see our friends at these events, whilst raising awareness and some funds as well.

Our supporters have been busy in various ways - Emily ran a marathon, Kimberley and friends organised a cake sale and open garden day, St Mary’s Church in Beverston donated the funds from the collection at their animal service, and we also had a doll auctioned, donated by Lesley Jane Dolls.

We are also very grateful for the donations of food at talks and in the collection bins at local supermarkets.

So a big thank you to all our supporters.

If you find a hedgehog in distress, wobbling about in daylight, or with flies buzzing round it, please don’t hesitate to call our emergency helpline – 0787 037 8207 or 01453 823871.
