CHARFIELD Yarn Bombers have knitted an entire air ambulance crew to raise money for the region’s air ambulance.

Great Western Air Ambulance (GWAAC) challenged the knitters to recreate their team and helicopter out of wool, as a fundraiser for the vital service.

The yarn bombers accepted the challenge, picked up their needles and got to work.

Over a period of five weeks they created a metre-long helicopter, 27 crew members and the GWAAC mascot.

Using enough wool to stretch a distance of five miles, the Charfield knitters made figures representing each member of the GWAAC team.

Knitting project organiser Helen Date said the idea came about after the yarn bombers had suggested that they might give the air ambulance charity a couple of knitted items to sell on.

“They asked ‘could you knit the entire crew?’. And ‘could you knit a helicopter?’,” she said.

The knitted helicopter was moved to the air ambulance headquarters in Almondsbury today.

The Great Western Air Ambulance Charity provide the critical care and air ambulance service to 2.1 million people across the region.

Its crew attend the most critical incidents across the region either by helicopter or by one of two critical care cars.

GWAAC receive no funding from the government or National Lottery, relying completely on the generosity of its donors and supporters to keep flying.
