NEWPORT County AFC striker Tristan Abrahams has fired a warning to Saturday’s opponents Swindon Town, insisting the Exiles are close to finding their scoring touch.

County have the second-best defensive record in League Two so far this season having conceded just six times in 10 games.

But Michael Flynn’s men have struggled at the other end of the pitch with only three other teams having scored fewer than their tally of nine goals.

Abrahams equalised from the penalty spot against Exeter City at the weekend but County missed a host of chances to beat the league leaders at Rodney Parade.

And the 20-year-old front man is convinced that the goals will come if they continue to create opportunities.

“We had a lot of chances and we believe we could have won it,” said Abrahams after the 1-1 draw with the Grecians, which followed an identical result at Macclesfield Town last Tuesday.

“I think there are a lot of positives to take from the two draws but we know that we should be scoring more and taking our chances. Hopefully we can do that in the next game.

“It’s one of those things in football, sometimes it doesn’t go in.

“But when the luck is right, everything will change and hopefully it is in the next game because we need to start turning these draws into wins.

“Our aim is to win every game. No matter who it is, we want to win every game that we play.

“We’ve just got to keep building on these performances and we go again.”

South Wales Argus:

Abrahams now has three goals in all competitions and he’s hungry for more, admitting he would jump at the chance to take over full-time penalty duties from Padraig Amond (above, left) who he replaced at half-time against Exeter.

“It’s my first league goal [for County] and I’m buzzing,” he said.

“I should have had a few more goals, but I’m buzzing now that I’ve finally got off the mark in the league. Hopefully I can kick on from here.

“I definitely put my hand up to be the regular penalty taker. I want to do anything that’s going to allow me to score goals – I’ll take free-kicks, corners, whatever it takes!

“I’m happy that the manager put his faith in me to take the penalty and very happy to have converted it.”

The former Norwich City academy player hopes he has done enough to claim a starting spot at Swindon, although he knows there is strong competition from Amond and Jamille Matt.

“It’s always frustrating when you’re not starting, but you’ve always got to keep the right mindset and be ready to come on and make an impact,” he said.

“I’m happy that I did that and just disappointed that we didn’t go on to win the game.

“It’s healthy competition and there’s no hard feelings if someone is playing ahead of you. We all just get on with it.

“Hopefully I can get back into the starting XI. I want to play as many games as possible.

“But whatever the gaffer decides to do, I’ll back him and I’ll be ready to play.”
