Police have called off a search for a missing man after finding a body in an unused water tank in Cromhall, near Wotton-Under-Edge.

Residents in the village, near Cowship Lane, had reported a large police presence over the last 48 hours and police have now confirmed they were searching for a missing man.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: "We have been carrying out a search in the area for a missing man.

"Sadly a body was found in an unused water tank at a property in the Cowship Lane area in Cromhall.

"The family of the missing man have been informed but formal identification still has to be carried out.

"The death is being treated as unexplained but not believed to be suspicious, pending the outcome of a post mortem.

"The coroner has been advised."

A resident had reported they had seen police officers searching in fields and also removing manhole covers in the area.
