THE rugby community has come together in a huge show of support for an arson-hit rugby club.

Wibsey Rugby Club has been left counting the cost after a storage container was torched on Saturday morning -  ruining thousands of pounds worth of equipment.

Essential kit like tackle pads, post protectors and a scrum machine were all kept in the container, as well as things used for fun days and barbecue equipment.

Steve Brooke, chairman of Wibsey Rugby Union, spoke of his anger.

He said: "It's an absolute disgrace, it's shocking."

But as news of the attack spread, local residents and both union and league sides united to help in any way they could.

Tony Vogel, chairman of Wibsey Warriors, said: "The response from the local community, Rugby League community and Rugby Union community in the last 24 hours has been beyond belief and as a club we feel very humbled by your generosity.

"Rest assured all your donations of equipment and money are very much appreciated and will ensure that we can move forward.

"Incidents such as what occurred here are sickening and you can question why you volunteer your time. Then people like yourselves restore your faith and give you greater resolve. We can never thank you enough."

At Wibsey RUFC's away game against Halifax Vandals yesterday morning, a post-match raffle was held to raise funds and the club has also offered the use of spare equipment.

Mr Brooke said the support has been "fantastic".
