Nostalgia by Howard Beard.

The area at the top of Stroud High Street, the Cross, has altered beyond recognition over the last century.

An early postcard, franked in 1910, shows a row of shops and houses on the left of Parliament Street and a continuous row of buildings on its right side, where the car-park is today.

One dolphin from the fountain in the centre survives in the Museum in the Park.

The space around the fountain was normally occupied by market stalls - one is shown in the picture.

The building on the right, Paris House, Ladies’ and Children’s Outfitters, is now the site of the new Silver Rooms Cafe and the laundrette Soap and Suds.

The fountain was still there when the 1930s photo was taken and behind it is the substantial headquarters building of the Stroud Co-operative Society.

Below the clock can still be seen the date it was put up, 1931.
